When you are first starting a new unit with the advanced template, all of the sections of the unit are "closed" or hidden. You'll see four orange bars: the first contains the title of the unit, the next three are the headings for each of the stages of UbD unit design -
Stage 1: Desired Results,
Stage 2: Evidence (Assessments), and
Stage 3: Learning Plan.
Just click on the the title of one of the stages and the elements of that stage will appear beneath it. For example, clicking on the orange bar with the text
Stage 1: Desired Results reveals six additional sections - State Standards, Essential Questions, Understandings, Knowledge & Skills, Long Term Goals, and the Stage 1 completeness check.
To work with one of the sections of stage 1, either click the "+Add New" link next to the title to add a new element of that type, or click the element title itself to list of all the existing elements of that type. For example, click on the word
Understandings. You see that a new area opens up underneath the word
Understandings. If this is a new unit, you will receive a message that there are no understandings to list.
Open Stage 2 by clicking the words
Stage 2: Evidence. Click the "+Add New" link next to the Other Evidence title. A new pop-up form appears, and the rest of the screen is dimmed. This pop-up box is used to add and edit all elements in the template.
Here are the common elements of all pop-ups.
First, you can close the pop-up at any time by clicking the black "x" in the top right-hand corner. This will close the popup and return you to the template.
Open the popup again by clicking the "+Add New" link next to other evidence once more. There is an orange bar that runs across the pop-up box, near the top. Inside this orange bar are links with white letters. The links in the orange bar take you to different parts of the form. In this example, if you click the words
2. Details, you'll see that the contents of the window have changed. You should now see a large text box that asks you to type a description of the Other Evidence you will gather in this unit. If you click on
1. Title you'll return to the first page of the form where you enter a custom title and choose from a standardized list of other evidence categories.
The other common feature of all the pop-up boxes is that there is a "submit" button that must be pressed in order to save the work you have done inside the pop-up. The SUBMIT button might say "Add", or it may say "Update" or "Choose." Make sure you click the submit button to save your changes.
For demonstration purposes, go ahead and fill in the "Add Other Evidence" pop-up box and click Add. If you do not enter information in each of the fields, you will receive a message asking you to complete the missing information. When you have filled everything out, click "Add" and the pop-up box will disappear, and your new evidence will appear in the list of "Other Evidence".
Click the title of the Other Evidence (underlined in black) to open up the details of the evidence. You'll see 5 sections underlined with a yellow-orange line: Details, Alignment, Rubrics, Student Handouts, and My Notes. All of these titles, except Details, are gray - indicating that no information has been provided for that section. You can click any of these titles to further expand the evidence. For example, click on "Alignment" to see the alignment section of the evidence. Click "Alignment" again to hide the section again.
